Palencia: “Los Angeles Will Be Insane During the World Cup”

Sergi Palencia has come a long way since his early days at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. After spells in France and Spain, the right-back made a bold move in 2023, swapping Europe for Major League Soccer with LAFC. Two years later, he’s thriving in Los Angeles — a city that will take center stage when the FIFA World Cup 2026™ arrives.

Speaking to FIFA, the Spanish defender shared his excitement about his adopted home, the rise of football in the USA, and why Spain could be one of the teams to watch next summer.

Life in Los Angeles

Palencia admits the transition to LAFC came at the perfect time. “I wanted a fresh start, and Los Angeles offered that,” he said. “The club, the city, the atmosphere — everything has been amazing. Even after three years, I’m still discovering new places here.”

World Cup Buzz

With two of USA’s group matches set to be played at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, Palencia has no doubt about the atmosphere:
“That’s going to be insane! The passion is already here in MLS, and when the World Cup comes, the energy will be on another level.”

USA’s Growth

Palencia praised the rapid development of the US national team. “They’ve grown like crazy. Almost every player is now in Europe, playing at top clubs. Pulisic is the leader, but the whole group is exciting. With Mauricio Pochettino guiding them, the future looks strong.”

Playing with Son Heungmin

The arrival of South Korean star Son Heungmin at LAFC has only added to the excitement. “He’s already settled and working hard,” Palencia said. “This league demands a lot physically, so it’s perfect preparation for the World Cup.”

On Lamine Yamal and Spain’s Chances

When asked about Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal, Palencia was glowing in his praise:
“His talent is once in 25 years. What he’s doing at his age is unbelievable. I have no doubt he’ll keep breaking records.”

As for Spain’s World Cup prospects, Palencia is optimistic. “We’ll be contenders. With players like Rodri leading and new talents stepping up, this team has the quality to go very far.”

First World Cup Memories

Like many Spaniards, Palencia’s most cherished memory is 2010. “I was 14 when Spain won. I remember every match, every name. That tournament made me fall even more in love with the game.”
