Robert Lewandowski is back in Poland’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™ qualifiers, taking up the captain’s armband under newly appointed coach Jan Urban.
The veteran Barcelona striker had been absent from the national setup after tensions with former coach Michal Probierz, who later stepped down. With Urban now at the helm, both player and coach are keen to start fresh.
“I’d like us to start training camp with a clean slate. Robert Lewandowski will be the team captain,” Urban confirmed ahead of Poland’s crucial UEFA qualifiers against the Netherlands on September 4 and Finland on September 7.
Lewandowski’s return follows weeks of conversations with Urban, who personally reached out to bring the 37-year-old back into the fold. His experience and leadership will be vital as Poland chase qualification.
Currently, Poland sit third in Group G with six points from three games—just behind the Netherlands on goal difference and one point adrift of leaders Finland. Lewandowski’s presence could be the boost they need to climb back into contention.
With 85 goals in 158 appearances for his country, Lewandowski remains Poland’s all-time leading scorer and a figure capable of turning matches at the highest level. Fans will be eager to see if his return sparks a new era of success for the national side.
