Matt Turner: “Playing at a Home World Cup Would Be Next Level”

Matt Turner’s football journey has taken him from Boston to London, Nottingham, and beyond. But now, less than a year out from the FIFA World Cup 2026™, the USA goalkeeper is back where it all started — at the New England Revolution.

After battling for minutes in the Premier League with Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace, Turner has returned to MLS on loan from Lyon with one goal in mind: to reclaim the No.1 spot for the United States on home soil.

Back to His Roots

For Turner, returning to the Revolution feels like coming full circle. “This is the club that gave me a chance when no one else really did,” he told FIFA. “Boston feels like home. The love I’ve received since coming back has been overwhelming, and it’s given me extra motivation to perform.”

Turner added that the decision wasn’t just professional, but also personal. His wife is from Boston, and the move has allowed them to be closer to family and friends after years of feeling “isolated” in Europe.

Lessons from England

Turner looks back at his Premier League stint with mixed emotions. “At Arsenal, training every day with Aaron Ramsdale and working under Mikel Arteta was incredible. I got a taste of what it takes to succeed at the highest level,” he said.

But his time at Nottingham Forest and Palace proved more difficult. “I’m self-aware enough to know I wasn’t consistent enough. It was tough, but I achieved a dream by playing in the Premier League. That chapter isn’t closed for me — I’d love another shot one day.”

Competition and Motivation

The 31-year-old admits losing his starting spot to Matt Freese at the Gold Cup was tough, but he sees it as healthy competition. “Matt reminds me of myself in some ways, making the most of opportunities. It pushes me to keep working harder.”

Memories of Qatar

Turner started for the USA at Qatar 2022 and still describes the experience as unforgettable. “Representing my country at the World Cup was something I’ll never forget. The pressure, the responsibility — I loved every second of it. The moment it ended, I asked myself, ‘How can I feel that again?’ That’s been my motivation ever since.”

Looking Ahead to 2026

The chance to play a World Cup on American soil is Turner’s ultimate driving force. “To do it at home would be next level. In Qatar, you didn’t really get to feel what your performances meant to the fans back in the US because you were so far away. In 2026, family, friends, and supporters will be right there. That’s what I’m working for every single day.”
